# Mandala Gardens — Kahiliholo Farm

## Design Concept

Three 30-foot diameter mandala gardens radiating from central gathering elements, inspired by the biodynamic garden patterns at Apricot Lane Farms. Each mandala creates a "room" enclosed by surrounding trees, providing both microclimate protection and a sense of intimacy. The circular beds radiate outward from a central focal point — a small pagoda, fountain, or seating area — connected by spoke paths and a perimeter ring path.

## Layout

### Mandala 1: Kitchen Garden (Near Main House)

**Center:** Small covered pagoda with bench seating (8ft diameter) — morning coffee spot, shaded work area for seed starting and sorting.

**Purpose:** Daily-use vegetables and herbs for the household. Closest to the kitchen for convenience.

**Beds:** 6 wedge-shaped raised beds radiating from center, separated by 2ft crushed coral paths. Each bed ~4ft wide x 8ft long (~32 sqft each). Total bed area: ~192 sqft.

**Crop Plan:**

| Bed | Crop | Season | Days to Harvest | Rotations/Year | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Salad mix (baby spinach, lettuce, arugula) | Oct–Apr (cool); lettuce year-round | 30–45 | 4–6 | Succession plant every 3 weeks |
| 2 | Herbs (basil, cilantro, mint, parsley) | Year-round | 30–60 | Continuous | High value per sqft, daily use |
| 3 | Snap peas + pole beans | Oct–Apr / May–Sep | 60–70 | 2 | Trellised on center-facing supports |
| 4 | Carrots + beets (root bed) | Year-round | 60–80 | 3–4 | Deep loose soil, interplanted |
| 5 | Cucumbers + cherry tomatoes | Year-round | 50–70 | 2–3 | Trellised cucumbers, staked tomatoes |
| 6 | Bell peppers + hot peppers | Year-round | 60–90 | 2 | Steady producers once established |

**Perimeter ring:** Edible flowers (nasturtium, borage) and pollinator attractants. Also serves as pest confusion border.

### Mandala 2: Market Garden (Central Pasture Area)

**Center:** Stone fountain with small water feature (6ft diameter) — creates humidity microclimate, attracts beneficial insects, beautiful focal point.

**Purpose:** Higher-volume production for farmers market sales and restaurant accounts. Larger beds, more intensive planting.

**Beds:** 8 wedge-shaped beds radiating from center, each ~4ft wide x 9ft long (~36 sqft each). Total bed area: ~288 sqft.

**Crop Plan:**

| Bed | Crop | Season | Days to Harvest | Rotations/Year | Est. Revenue/Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Baby greens mix (spinach, kale, chard, mizuna) | Year-round (shade cloth summer) | 25–40 | 6–8 | $400–600 |
| 3 | Broccoli + broccolini | Oct–Apr | 60–90 | 2 | $150–200 |
| 4 | Carrots (bunched, rainbow) | Year-round | 70–80 | 3 | $150–200 |
| 5 | Beets (bunched, Chioggia + golden) | Year-round | 55–70 | 4 | $150–200 |
| 6 | Cucumbers (Japanese + lemon) | Year-round | 50–60 | 3 | $200–300 |
| 7 | Snap peas + snow peas | Oct–Apr | 60–70 | 2 | $150–250 |
| 8 | Celery + cutting celery | Nov–Mar | 90–120 | 1–2 | $100–150 |

**Perimeter ring:** Comfrey (dynamic accumulator, mulch source), lemongrass (pest deterrent), and marigolds.

**Estimated annual gross from this mandala:** $1,300–$1,900

### Mandala 3: Medicinal & Specialty Garden (Near Vanilla Shade House)

**Center:** Open-air pagoda with hanging vanilla cuttings for propagation display (8ft diameter) — connects visually to the vanilla operation, doubles as a workshop/teaching space.

**Purpose:** High-value specialty crops, medicinal herbs, and crops that complement the processing operation. Also the most visually striking garden for tours and events.

**Beds:** 6 wedge-shaped beds with curved edges (more ornamental), each ~4ft wide x 8ft long (~32 sqft each). Total bed area: ~192 sqft.

**Crop Plan:**

| Bed | Crop | Season | Days to Harvest | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Turmeric + ginger | Year-round (harvest 8–10 mo) | 240–300 | Complements processing line |
| 2 | Hawaiian chili pepper (nioi) + Thai basil | Year-round | 90–120 | Value-add: dried chili, chili honey |
| 3 | Lemongrass + pandan | Year-round | 90+ | Tea blends, cooking, essential oil |
| 4 | Moringa | Year-round | 60–90 (leaves) | Superfood powder, tea |
| 5 | Okinawan sweet potato + taro (dryland) | Year-round | 120–180 | Cultural significance, staple food |
| 6 | Edible flowers + microgreens staging | Year-round | 7–30 | Highest $/sqft, restaurant demand |

**Perimeter ring:** Cacao seedlings (future understory), ti plants (cultural, windbreak), and plumeria (fragrance, wedding appeal).

Each mandala is ~30ft diameter (707 sqft total). With ~60% bed coverage and 40% paths/center, usable growing area is ~420 sqft per mandala.

## Consolidated Economics

| | Mandala 1 (Kitchen) | Mandala 2 (Market) | Mandala 3 (Specialty) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Bed area** | 192 sqft | 288 sqft | 192 sqft | 672 sqft |
| **Primary purpose** | Household food | Market sales | Specialty/processing | Mixed |
| **Est. annual gross revenue** | $200–400 (saved grocery costs) | $1,300–1,900 | $800–1,200 | $2,300–3,500 |
| **Annual input costs** | $150 | $300 | $200 | $650 |
| **Labor hours/year** | 100–150 | 200–300 | 150–200 | 450–650 |
| **Revenue per labor hour** | — | $5–7 | $5–6 | $4–6 |

### Honest Assessment

The mandala gardens at this scale (~0.05 acres total) are **not a significant revenue driver**. At $2,300–$3,500 gross and 450–650 labor hours, the effective wage is $4–6/hour — below minimum wage.

**The real value is:**

1. **Speed to first revenue.** Greens and herbs produce in 30–60 days. You have product to sell at the Kilauea farmers market within 2 months of planting, while vanilla and breadfruit are years away.
2. **Operational learning.** Growing, harvesting, packing, pricing, selling, tracking — all the muscles the operation needs, practiced at low stakes.
3. **Community presence.** A weekly farmers market booth with beautiful produce from "Pranayama Provisions" builds brand recognition and relationships before the premium products arrive.
4. **Household food security.** Reducing grocery costs on Kauai (where produce is expensive) has real value.
5. **Beauty and placemaking.** The mandalas with pagodas and fountains transform the property from "horse pasture" to "destination farm." This matters for weddings, tours, and the overall vision.
6. **Crop integration.** Turmeric, ginger, chili, and herbs feed directly into the processing operation.

### Scaling Decision

If the market response is strong and labor is available, the mandala format can be replicated. Each additional 30ft mandala adds ~$800–1,500/year gross and 150–250 labor hours. At 6–8 mandalas, the garden operation starts to become a meaningful revenue line ($8K–15K/year) and justifies dedicated garden labor.

Alternatively, if market demand warrants it, consider adding **linear market beds** (Apricot Lane style) in the pasture area for higher-volume crops while keeping the mandalas as the beautiful focal points.

## Infrastructure Requirements

| Item | Est. Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Raised bed materials (cedar/rock) | $1,500–2,500 | 20 beds total across 3 mandalas |
| Crushed coral/gravel paths | $500–800 | Local coral aggregate |
| Pagoda 1 (kitchen garden) | $2,000–4,000 | Simple covered structure, local wood |
| Fountain (market garden) | $800–1,500 | Solar-powered recirculating |
| Pagoda 2 (specialty garden) | $2,000–4,000 | Open-air, larger for workshops |
| Irrigation (drip lines + timer) | $500–800 | Connect to existing water |
| Soil amendments (initial) | $400–600 | Compost, worm castings, biochar |
| Shade cloth structures | $300–500 | For summer greens protection |
| **Total** | **$8,000–14,700** | |

## Planting Timeline

| Month | Action |
|---|---|
| **Month 1** | Clear mandala sites, build raised beds, install paths, amend soil |
| **Month 2** | Plant Mandala 1 (kitchen garden) — greens, herbs, cucumbers |
| **Month 3** | Plant Mandala 2 (market garden) — begin succession planting |
| **Month 4** | First harvest from Mandala 1. Begin Mandala 3 construction |
| **Month 5** | First farmers market sales. Plant Mandala 3 specialty crops |
| **Month 6** | All three mandalas producing. Evaluate market response |
| **Month 8–12** | Refine crop mix based on what sells, what grows best, what's worth the labor |
